Earth's Super Villian

Hi! It's Zoe. These days, keeping the Earth a clean, healthy planet is important because of the huge amount of pollution we are releasing into our atmosphere, land, and waters. All this pollution is harmful to our planet and it is up to us to fix what we've started.
One of the worst type of pollution is the plastic bag. This is found every time you go to the store and huge amounts of them are used every day. Here are some facts we should all remember the next time we go to buy something.
  • 1 billion seabirds and mammals die every year because of plastic bags
  • Sea turtles and other marine animals can mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and accidentally digest them. This can hurt and even kill the animals.
  • Plastic bags can take over 1,000 years to decompose which make it hard to get rid of them easily.
These facts are only a few of many and it is up to us to change it. All we need to do is Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Have you ever dreamed of being a superhero and saving the world? Well, if you Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, you can! Even when you  recycle one piece of paper, you are still making an impact on the world. Lets learn how to help our planet.
To reuse plastic bags, we can use them again and again for different purposes to help prevent throwing them away. Things like needing a bag for your wet clothes when you go swimming and and a temporary lunch bag are all ways to reuse plastic bags. You can also get a bit more creative and make some really neat stuff with plastic bags. Here's a cool idea:
                                                                Plastic Bag Wallets
                                         Materials:
  • 3 plastic bags
  • iron/ ironing board
  • piece of 4x4 wax paper
  • scissors
  • tape (optional)
                                 Directions:
     1. Align the 3 plastic bags and cover them with the 4x4 wax paper.Use iron to melt the bags together ( ask for parent help because this is extremely dangerous). Make sure not to go over 4x4 wax paper because plastic will melt and make a big mess.       2. After melting bags, take off wax paper. Ask your parent to cut a 3x4 piece of melted plastic. Fold this plastic hot dog style. Then ask your parent to melt the sides together using the iron ( use wax paper again) or tape the sides.
      3. Fold the wallet hamburger style and you're done! If you would like, add a pocket or two and decorate your new wallet. Enjoy!
So there's reusing, an easy and fun thing to do while saving the planet.

Reducing is easy, too. When we reduce, we use less of something, so if we want to reduce the amount of plastic bags we use, we should consider if we really need a plastic bag. Here's an example: if I go with my mommy to the store and buy some milk, do I need a bag for it or could I just carry it by the handle? We can also use reusable bags instead of plastic bags. These little things make big differences.
Lastly,Recycling. Check to see if your local recycling center takes plastic bags or even your local general store. Like the facts I showed earlier say, it takes a long time to get rid of plastic bags so recycling helps a lot. Recycling uses both reusing and reducing as well. Its everything tied into one, a great way to help our planet.
So there you have it. Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. Three amazing superheroes to fight back the super villain that is plastic bag pollution. And you can be a superhero as well! You can start right now by spreading the word! Bye!

Four Eyes Are Cool

Hi! It's Zoe. Last weekend I got glasses. They have thick red frames with something called cat eyes design because of their slanted sides. It was interesting to see the world in a whole new way.

At first, I thought I didn't need glasses because I was so used to seeing blurry and I thought it was how people saw the world. But over time my vision started to get worse and we went to see the optometrist (a fancy word for eye doctor).

At the optician's  office, I had to go through many tests to see how bad my eyesight was and find out if I needed glasses. the doctor said my left eye was a "1" and my right eye was a "2", meaning I had poor eyesight! It was funny because my brother had his eyes checked the same day and he has 20/20 vision, that means perfect eyesight. The optometrist prescribed glasses and my mommy and daddy helped me find a pair that I liked.

When we got home I quickly put on the glasses and saw everything in such detail! I could see every leaf on every tree and every single blade of grass. It was a wonderful experience.

On the first day of school, I was a bit nervous about what people would think about my new glasses, but people said that they thought they were nice, or the glasses looked good on me. I was relieved they thought these things.

So, if you ever get glasses, don't be afraid about what people are going think. Enjoy how wonderful the world will look when you can see everything clearly. It might be better than you expect. Bye!

The Importance of Recycling to Help Save Our Planet

Hi! It’s Zoe, today I’d like to share with you the importance of recycling. Here’s a few of the things I’ll be sharing.

Do you like to go to the beach or the park? Well, these places are getting dirtied up because people aren’t recycling. They throw their trash on the ground instead of simply putting it in recycling bins. Never do this and always recycle.

Do you like animals as well? Well, since people normally do not recycle at the beach their trash gets washed into the sea and sometimes eaten by sea creatures. This might hurt the animals and we never want that, so remember to recycle!    If you need to know what things you can recycle, show the next empty can or bottle to your mommy or daddy and ask them to show you the recycling sign. This sign means you can recycle that item. If you ever see it on something always remember to recycle the item.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens to recycled things, I can tell you. It is normally made into other cans, boxes, bottles and more, but sometimes it can be made into things like rugs and mats. Wood can even be made by recycled sawdust. It is interesting how many things can be made by recycled materials.

If you don’t have a recycling bin, ask your parents to buy one for the family. Share a few of the things I told you today with them. Who knows? Maybe you can help the world just a little bit more.

People even make art out of recycled things. Why, just the other day I made a beautiful stepping stone with recycled glass and cement with my mommy and Mimi. But always remember that if you want to do a project like this, you always have to have a grown-up with you.

Well, I must go now. Remember to always recycle. If you have any questions, remember you can always ask me online whenever you want. Who knows? Maybe we can even become writing friends! Bye!
