Zoe's tortoise, Shelly - a Red Footed tortoise
Hi, it's Zoe. Today is the last day of the "Three Important R's" I have been writing about. I've written about recycling and about responsibility, and today I would like to talk about respect. Of course there are all types of respect. There is the respect we show our parents, teachers, and friends. There is the respect we show our community and the environment. But I want to continue with the idea of the respect we show to our pets like being mindful of their needs and respecting them by creating healthy loving homes for them.

I've talked about taking care of my animals before. I mentioned all three of my dogs and my Red Footed tortoise, Shelly. I haven't talked about taking care of her. I have to be respectful towards Shelly because of her unique needs. As her owner, I remember how it must feel to depend on someone to take care of me. I depend on my parents to take care of me, and I am in a way Shelly's parent because I take care of her.

Recently, I had to build a new log hut for her because she had grown too big for her other one and it's too cold to let her sleep outdoors in the backyard. She prefers it out there in the summer. She has an indoor pen for winter days and nights when it gets too cold outside. My daddy told me we needed to build Shelly a new log hut for her pen. So, we went to the garage where we built a great hut with screws and bolts and a small wooden crate we had. We used her old log as the roof. I had lots of fun with my daddy and I made sure to say thank you to him when we finished. Shelly loves her new house that I call the tortoise barn.

Shelly is very interesting. For one thing, none of my other friends have a tortoise for a pet. Shelly actually comes to you when you call her (sometimes). She can also live for 60 years! She eats mostly vegetables, but NOT lettuce or spinach. We feed her thawed frozen mix vegetables. She likes fruit too, like strawberries and pear, but her favorite fruit is raspberry. She makes me laugh when I watch her walk because she waddles! Watch the video of her walking below.

Well, that wraps up this topic on respect. There are many things you need to be respectful towards and I wish I could share some more with you. But, I must go and get ready for bed. If you have questions or just want to say hi remember to leave me a comment. Bye!
