Anywhere that I live, I like learning the history of the area and learning about the historic people of the area. I loved learning about Appalachian history when I grew up in eastern Tennessee. My family was one of the first 200 families to settle there. I loved learning about the history of Texas when I lived there for many years and I have loved learning about the history of California where I now live.
One thing that I firmly believe is the we should honor the people who came before us. I now have a house in Sedona, AZ which I am developing as a short term rental. I love the peace and grace of Sedona and the special feeling of the area. Sedona is in Yavapai County so I wanted to know what Yavapai meant. That's when I found out about the Yavapai Indians, an ancient people who migrated to the area.
Like no other part of the country, Native American culture and history play a dynamic role in the life and culture of northern and central Arizona. The Yavapai were among of the first people of Sedona and the Verde Valley. The name comes from the Yavapai words Enyaleva (sun) and pay (people) "the People of the Sun". The modern Nation is the amalgamation of two historically distinct tribes both of whom occupied the Upper Verde Valley prior to European invasion. The Yavapai Indians were a nomadic culture and its people were known for their beautiful woven baskets.
In a tribute to this ancient "First Nation" culture, I have my little "First Nation" babies, who greet visitors to my home. They sit on a prominent shelf in the living room and add a touch of gentle sweetness to the atmosphere of the house.
