Mr. Little meets Mr. Big

As probably everyone who reads these blogs and everyone who knows me must realize, I am an animal lover - particularly dogs (although, truthfully I would love to have a little pig, baby goat or a llama too - and I love sweet cats as well but I am allergic to them so that's out) but I live in a small city in a gated community with a small yard and I wouldn't be allowed most of those creatures so I have what I have - two little "pound puppies" Tinker and Nunzi.  Tinker is mostly shih tzu and he was found on the street after an accident where he had lost an eye and Nunzi, another shih tzu,  who was given up by his former owner (not sure of the reason - but there is evidence that he was loved by that owner).  One of his front legs is a little shorter than the other three legs and he has a little hop to his walk because of it.  But it doesn't seem to bother him and he can beat Tinker in a paw race anytime.  They are both very bow legged too so they are my odd pair.

They enjoy their morning and evening walks.  We walk on the boardwalk by the beach in the evenings and Nunzi and Tinker get to meet all the other dogs while I get to meet and talk to their owners.  Everyone gets a little exercise in a beautiful setting.

This is a chance meeting that Nunzi had with a gorgeous big dog who was a gentle senior citizen and also a pound puppy himself (there are adoption groups for just about all breeds of dogs and mutts too).  As little Nunzi and the very big dog made friends, it reminded me about how dogs see past the exterior and just know that there is a brotherhood of dogs underneath the differences.  My thought is that we should see the world the way they do.  Although we may look as different as Nunzi and his new friend do on the surface, all people are the same inside in our needs and desires and we should greet each other with an open attitude of acceptance the way these two did. If we tried it, the world might be a better place.

The Magic of Bubbles

Blowing bubbles is fun for all ages - for little kids and also big "adult kids".  There are small bubbles and big bubbles; those that go away immediately and those that last and float to the sky.  You can even add food coloring to your bubble mix and make soft, jewel colored bubbles.

What makes a bubble?  Bubbles are made by blowing air through a pipe or wand  filled with a soapy bubble mixture to form a hollow ball.  Their colors (even the ones from the colored soap) come from reflections on the bubble's surface.  When we blow to form the bubbles, our warm breath fills the bubbles and makes the them float in the air.

Making a bubble mixture at home is very simple - it is just dishwashing detergent and water.  The more detergent you add to your mix the larger bubbles you can make.  Adding a little glycerin to the mix will make your bubbles last longer and will slow down the water evaporation that causes the bubbles to pop.  If you stick the bubble solution in the refrigerator, and allow it to stand for a few hours or overnight, it can produce stronger bubbles too.

A good way to make a glycerin bubble mixture is to measure 6 cups of water into a large container, then pour 1 cup of liquid dish soap into the water and slowly stir it until the soap is mixed in. Try not to let bubbles form while you are stirring because it puts unwanted air into the mixture.  Measure 1 tablespoon of glycerin (or 1/4 cup of corn syrup) into the soapy mix and let it sit.  Be aware that the corn syrup will make a sticky spot when the bubbles burst so I recommend the glycerin - it's slippery, but not sticky.

You can play games with your bubbles:  See who can blow the largest bubble or who can blow the most interesting group of bubbles or the longest lasting bubble.  If the glycerin bubbles last a long time and there is no wind blowing to carry them away, have a race to see who can push their bubble the furtherest without breaking it.

Bubbles are fun and have a magic to them.
. When you see bubbles dancing in the air, you can’t help but lose your cares and worries.
Let the images of bubbles help you to get in touch with your inner child - to be free to appreciate each moment in all its beauty and fragility - and to live it to its fullest!
