To begin our project we went to our local arts and craft store and got tiny little bottles for the lip balms and slightly larger bottles for the face creams. Then we looked up ingredients to incorporate that would be healthy and good for the skin. We decided on coconut oil for the base, with additions of aloe vera gel, cocoa butter as a thickener, jojoba oil, lavender essential oil, and Manuka honey from New Zealand (it is an especially healthy honey but any organic honey will do). We also bought a little bit of beet juice for color to add to the slightly yellow coloring of the cocoa butter to make it a light rosy orange. We wanted to have the best and healthiest ingredients with no additives so we bought everything organic and all from a health food store.
In a mixing bowl we mixed together 1/2 cup of coconut oil, 1/2 cup of aloe vera gel, a teaspoon of jojoba oil and one small packet of honey. We then put 1 cup of cocoa butter in the microwave and melted it slowly (30 seconds at a time) and poured it in the mixture. We added 2 drops of beet juice and whipped it all together in a tall container so it wouldn't splash out. When the mixture was whipped, we poured it in our little containers. Then we doused each container with our lavender oil and put the containers in the refrigerator to solidify.
After an hour or so we took the containers out and decorated them with pretty ribbons and butterfly and heart decals. Once the mixture had solified in the refrigerator, it stayed in a soft solid form at room temperature. Now we have some lovely and healthy gifts to give to everyone!
