A Scaredy Cat

This is the second blog about my recent Canadian trip.

A scaredy cat is defined as someone has a tremendous, perhaps an unjustified, fear of something and I tend to be a scaredy cat of heights.  For instance I can hardly look at ads or movies that feature high places in them. So my recent trip to Canada required some work to overcome my fears as we rode up the very steep 4 person gondola to the mountain peak for lunch at 7,486 ft to have a panoramic view of Banff and the Bow Valley and as we went up the elevator to have dinner at the top of the Calgary Tower.  I already posted a photo of us at the mountain top but these Calgary photos I saved for this blog.

The Calgary Tower is a 191 meter (627 ft) free standing observation tower that was built in 1967 to celebrate the Canadian centennial.  It is one of tallest towers in the western hemisphere.  It can be compared to the Space Needle in Seattle at 605 ft., the San Antonio Tower of the Americas at 750 ft., the Stratosphere tower in Las Vegas at 1,147 ft. and the tallest tower in the western hemisphere, the CN Tower in Toronto at 1500 ft. With my fear of heights I don't believe that I will be going up most of the others. But I didn't want to let my son down so when he suggested that we go up the Calgary tower for dinner, I gulped and said yes.

As we rode the elevator to the top and watched through the elevator windows as Calgary quickly became small below us, my stomach had that sinking feeling I always get. At the observation deck we stopped for photos but as I stood for a photo, I couldn't bring myself to look through the glass floor at the city below.  Then we went on up to the next level for dinner.  At the top the nightscape of the city was beautiful as the restaurant rotated slowly around.  After a leisurely and delightful dinner, I relaxed to thoroughly enjoy the experience.  The thought: sometimes you have to look beyond your fears to enjoy life.
